Open Studios @ The Golden Foundation for the Arts, New Berlin NY March 31 2016

Sam & Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts
237 Bell Road, New Berlin NY 13411

Time yet again for a trip out to the Golden Foundation's residency barn for some FRESH BLOOD! in the form of the first residency group of the year. Wouldn't miss em, and in exchange for showing a bit of what goes on they let me snitch all the good ideas I can get my eyes on. Seriously pays to check these things out, not only to see the amazing artworks but to network with other arts professionals who come from all over the CNY/upstate region to see wazzap.

Visit their site at the link below to learn more, stay hip to the calendar schedule for the year & how to apply for your own turn on the swings. And don't miss the big Made In Paint show at the SAG Gallery at the main facility opening this Saturday April 9 at 4:30pm. Dress to impress!

CEDAR SHINGLES! Spotted em from across the room and said No way! This guy's my homeboy, and a sculptor who uses the wood forms for their three dimensional aspects rather than a painting surface.

One of my own cedar shingle paintings. I believe this one is "Zombie Father & Son Feasting on Human Flesh" ... Stay in school, kids.

Arpad's experiment rack. And a whole show right there, pretty much.

Demonstrating the construction of his wood forms which reminded me of something at the time, could not place it until watching Captain Kirk flip open his communicator.

Liking the little shelves. Never thought of that ... Idea swiped.

Arpad Forgo

Arpad Forgo, and I am thinking the space between the wall and the back of the work is just as active as the painted surface. Yet another display idea for irregularly shaped painted wood forms.

Arpad Forgo, and digging the faint glow from the neon green on the back as well as his emphasis of the organic irregular form of the shingle.

YO.

Instant lesson about the color blue, and its possibilities. Quickly lost track of just how much work Sarajo had churned out during her month at the Barn. And as usual drove home muttering about throwing the damn phone into the swamp & barricading myself in my own studio for a week. There's one every group! Makes me realize I'm not painting enough and none of us are getting any younger. Good swift kick in the pants.

Sarajo Frieden, and the first of many furrowed rows that the painters scraped into their wet paint.

Sarajo Frieden. I thought these were collages at first but its all layered paint. But she hardly uses a brush which is what confused me: Almost no brush marks. Her favorite tool was some sort of kitchen spatula, $.99 cents and it never dries out or needs to be carefully scrubbed back to life.

Yeah I know ... I need to paint more. And make a new website.
Talk about having your lunch handed to you.

Lorene with some of her paintings from the residency, and apologies on not having mastered the light/color setting on my new pocket camera yet. Let's see how I did ...

Lorene Anderson, and I want a slice of that with whipped cream and peanuts.

Some of the furrowed land outside of the studios.

And now in the paintings?

OMG!

The Tubes Machine! Or "Lisa" as I have been told she was named, patiently awaiting former graduate students. Who will have that funnel fitted to their heads and all of the mush they picked up at school sucked from their brains so they can begin anew to paint for themselves.

Exactly.

YES!! With my main man Bill from the plant, who brings us cow tails & sour balls from his little house under the stairs by the mixing vats. I think we both got a decent FB profile picture out of this, and all kidding aside no trip to the Barn is complete without getting to chat with Bill for a minute.

They fed me!!
