In Seeing Sight: Catharine Westlake at Hamilton Center for the Arts, October 1 - November 4 2012

Lost in the kerfluffle of the past week was my colleague Catharine Westlake's show of recent artworks on display in the Hamilton Center for the Arts' gallery space next door & upstairs from our Broad Street Gallery in Hamilton, NY. I had encountered Catharine's paintings in the past & was excited for a chance to see a collection of them together ... But aside from a brief look after our October 14 talk by Catharine's friend Richard Castellane have not had much time to spend with the work. I'd meant to re-shoot the pictures I'd taken over the weekend after setup for our Halloween Spooktacular at BSG was complete. But found the gallery occupied by Colgate students in the midst of their 24 Hour Burn where they stage one act plays written by other students. So here are the pictures I was able to get on the 14th, with the show up until November 4 during normal HCA hours.

Our Colgate volunteer Emma on the day I was able to take a look. Interning and volunteering are very important for young people in search of careers and HCA has a close connection to Colgate with many of the staff positions filled by volunteers.

Zombie Paintings, October 18 2012

Two fun gigs I'm involved with for the Halloween season are our Broad Street Galler's Spooktacular Halloween Artorama in Hamilton on Saturday October 20th from 2pm-8pm with a special installation of ghastly Halloween artworks. Then on Saturday October 20th its the highly anticipated Utica Zombie Walk 2012 where Tony Thompson, myself and a couple other artists are doing an installation of ghoulish zombified artworks for part of their evacuation train promotion.

I put my thinking cap on and decided to kill 2 birds with one stone by doing a bunch of small funky zombie paintings on found wood surfaces for both events. And whip a couple older ones into shape for inclusion, though none of the pieces shown are necessarily in a final state.

Four minutes of footage taken on two consecutive evenings showing the murals in progress.

Richard Castellane at Broad Street Gallery + Open House, Hamilton NY October 14 2012

The Broad Street Gallery, part of the Hamilton Center for the Arts at 20 Broad Street in lovely Hamilton, New York.

The high point of the day -- finally meeting artist & fellow King Crimson fan Kathy Donovan! with Tony Thompson too, and a totally smoking hot picture by painter Tim Rand.

Hamilton NY.

The main event for the afternoon was a talk by curator Richard Castellane on his career in influencing the shape of 20th century art via the creative talents he chose to promote. There were a lot of them.

A more thorough blog post on Catharine's show to follow shortly, though I may have to shoot some additional pix on Wednesday before our BSG planning meeting.

My favorite! and the influence of Tony Thompson, perhaps?

Our volunteer Emma from Colgate! Volunteering, interning and apprenticing are so necessary in shaping a career & this young lady has the right spirit.
